Poland: Presidential win seen as major setback for abortion rights

Karol Nawrocki’s narrow presidential victory in Poland is being called a devastating blow to abortion rights by activists and lawmakers. Backed by the right-wing Law and Justice (PiS) party, Nawrocki opposes any expansion of abortion access and is expected to maintain or even tighten Poland’s near-total ban. Efforts by centrist Prime Minister Donald Tusk to liberalize abortion laws have repeatedly failed, frustrating activists who feel abandoned by political leaders. The hostile environment for reproductive rights persists, with abortion providers and support centers facing harassment. Activists are now turning to the European Union for support, emphasizing the urgency of transnational solidarity in defending women’s rights.
