Romania: Alarming decline in access to abortion services
Monday, April 21, 2025 12:30 PM

Access to abortion in Romania is becoming increasingly restricted, despite the procedure being legal during the first 14 weeks of pregnancy. A growing number of hospitals and doctors are refusing to provide abortion care, often citing personal or religious beliefs, while state authorities fail to ensure alternatives. This trend reflects a broader rollback of reproductive rights, fueled by stigma, disinformation, and the rise of anti-choice narratives within both the healthcare system and public discourse. Women, especially in rural areas, face growing obstacles in accessing accurate information and safe services. Human Rights Watch and local healthcare professionals warn that unless urgent measures are taken, Romania risks endangering the health and rights of thousands of women and girls.
