Seychelles: UNIFEM and National Government Develop Two-Year Action Plan to Eradicate Gendered Violence

In recent years, Seychelles has made substantial progress in creating equal access to political rights, health care, and education for women and girls. However, incidents of domestic violence are prevalent and have rapidly increased in the last decade. In 2008, the government responded to concerns of the growing prevalence of gendered violence and adopted the National Strategy on Domestic Violence. The recently released action plan is meant to operationalize this strategy. It calls for rehabilitation of sexual and violent perpetrators, prevention of gendered violence, awareness campaigns, and a Domestic Violence Act to be adopted by the end of the year.
In addition to releasing the action plan, multiple Seychelles’ stakeholders signed on to UNIFEM’s Say NO – UNiTE to End Violence Initiative. The initiative is a global call to action that relies on individuals, organizations, governments and the private sector to realize a future that is free from violence against women and girls. Some of the signers included the National Council for Children, the National Institute of Health and Social Studies, the Family Tribunal, the national police force, and various representatives for the judiciary.
