Spain: Over 750 Pharmacies Will Become Purple Points in Extremadura, Spain

Over 750 pharmacies, dispensaries, and small rural pharmacy outlets in Spain’s Extremadura region will become “purple points” to help prevent gender-based violence (GBV) and offer support to women experiencing gender or sexual violence. Purple points are spaces that provide information to raise awareness of gender-based violence and respond to the needs of victims of sexual assault by initiating the established protocols.

Under an agreement between the regional Secretariat for Equality and the provincial pharmaceutical associations of Badajoz and Cáceres, two direct grants totaling €238,139 will finance training for over 1,800 pharmacy professionals and the creation of public awareness materials. Pharmacies will distribute items displaying the internationally recognized fist with the thumb inside to help GBV victims discreetly communicate abuse, enabling rapid activation of support resources.

The initiative will also include social media campaigns and in-pharmacy video displays, aiming to raise public awareness and make pharmacies safe, accessible points of assistance for all citizens.
