Spain: Spain’s Government Initiates Reform To Make Abortion A Constitutional Right

Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez has begun the process to include the right to abortion in Spain’s Constitution, under the article “Protecting health.” As a first step, the government requested a legal opinion from the State Council, which would begin the process to enshrine the right to abortion in the Constitution. Sánchez said the goal is to guarantee equal access to abortion for all women.

The conservative Popular Party (PP) rejected the reform, saying abortion “will not be included” in the Constitution. Sánchez urged PP leader Feijóo to support the measure, citing his past defense of abortion rights. Although widely welcomed by progressive political groups, the reform needs approval from three-fifths of Parliament, making success uncertain.
