Sudan: Widespread Sexual Violence and Humanitarian Crisis in Darfur

A recent United Nations update includes harrowing accounts from women who fled Darfur after the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) captured al-Fashir in late October. Many said they were raped while trying to escape the fighting, and several reported becoming separated from their children during the rush to flee the city. The UN estimates that around 11 million women and girls across Sudan are now facing acute food insecurity, leaving them even more exposed as the conflict deepens and aid routes close. Officials say sexual violence appears to be used intentionally by armed groups, not as isolated acts but as a broader tactic tied to displacement and the breakdown of community protection systems. The combined impact of violence, hunger, and mass movement has created conditions in which women and girls are among the least protected.
