The Advocates for Human Rights is sending a delagation of staff, volunteers and board memebrs to the UN Commission on the Status of Women, which will meet for its 58th session in New York, March 10-21.

At the UN Commission on the Status of Women, The Advocates' staff, alongside with partner, Genoveva Tisheva from the Bulgarian Gender Research Foundation, and Cindy Dyer of Vital Voices will present a panel on monitoring the implementation of domestic violence legislation around the world. The presentation will address violence against women and girls as a barrier to achieving the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) for women and girls. Domestic violence laws can help protect women and girls and promote gender equality when effectively implemented. The Advocates for Human Rights has conducted monitoring studies on the implementation of domestic violence laws in more than 20 countries. These studies, which apply international human rights standards, have been instrumental in protecting victims and holding perpetrators accountable. The presentation will discuss The Advocates' process of partnering with NGOs, conducting interviews of major stakeholders, analyzing the interviews to reach conclusions and make recommendations, as well as how to release reports to maximize impact.

The event will be on Monday, March 10th, 8:30 - 10:00 AM in the Hardin Room Church Center United Nations, 777 United Nations Plaza, New York, NY.
The presentation is free and open to the public.
