Indonesia: United Nations Urges Indonesia to Ban FGM

The Office of the High Commissioner on Human Rights is urging Indonesia to ban all forms of female genital mutilation (FGM). Indonesia has seen a growing number of medical professionals carrying out the harmful practice, often referred to as "medicalized FGM". A report by UNICEF released last month outlines why all forms of FGM, including so called "medicalized FGM", are harmful to women and girls.
A regulation permitting medicalized FGM violates a number of international laws, including the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW), to which Indonesia is a signatory. In addition to being harmful to the women and girls who undergo FGM, these harmful practices performed by health practitioners are often seen as legitimizing FGM, and are therefore detrimental to global efforts to eradicate it.
