Turkey: Activists Combatting the Invisibility and Stigma Around Menstrual Health

Through five key lessons, this article explores how Ilayda Eskiter-Schoğlu, a menstrual justice activist and founder of the NGO We Need to Talk, is fighting to meet ignored or stigmatized menstrual needs in Turkey. After an earthquake struck her hometown, she realized that in post-disaster scenarios, menstrual products are essential components of humanitarian aid kits to ensure women’s and girls' health. However, because menstrual health is still considered shameful or immoral to discuss in Turkey, We Need to Talk creates safe spaces for honest conversation. They also advocate for the inclusion of comprehensive sexual education in school curricula, and her team has successfully pushed for a reduction in the tax on menstrual products - a step towards viewing them as essential needs. The NGO is facing a lot of backlash, which reflects the importance of the fight.
