After a man killed his ex-wife, TV journalist Tulay Dagasan, in broad daylight on a city street, activists and opposition party politicians are complaining that Turkey ignores the problems of violence against women. The journalist had focused on women's rights and male violence, and had reportedly been receiving death threats from her ex-husband for some time. Turkey was the first country to ratify the Council of Europe's Convention on Combating Violence against Women, the so-called Istanbul Convention, in 2011. But conservative and religious critics complained the convention undermined traditional family values, and President Erdogan withdrew Turkey from the treaty in 2021.
