Turkiye: Draft bill poses a threat to LGBTQ+ rights and gender identity freedoms

Shortly after President Erdoğan announced that 2025 is the "Year of the Family," the queer rights organization named Kaos Gay and Lesbian Cultural Research and Solidarity Association obtained a new draft bill from the justice ministry that aims to criminalize support for LGBTQIA+ rights and enshrine “biological sex” in law. The legislation includes provisions that would imprison individuals who hold same-sex engagements or marriages, raise the gender reassignment age to 21, and also increase hurdles for changing gender on government documents. As a result, LGBTQIA+ activists are deeply concerned, viewing these measures as an attempt to silence their community and undermine broader human rights movements in Turkey.
