Figures show a rapid rise in the number of women and girls in the United Kingdom who face violence and intimidation by their communities and family members. "Honor" crimes, defined as acts to defend the perceived “honor” of a community or family, can involve threats, abduction, acid attacks, beatings, forced marriage, mutilation and murder. Statistics show that reports of this type of crime rose 47% in one year. The 39 police forces that collected data recorded 2,823 incidents in 2010. However, advocates say that this number does not capture the actual level of this type of violence, because many girls and women do not go to the police for fear of devastating reprisals.
