Al Franken, the junior senator from Minnesota, United States, has submitted an amendment to the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act of 2011. The provision would prevent women from begin evicted solely for being victims of “domestic violence, dating violence, sexual assault, or stalking.” The amendment was originally presented as its own bill, but has since been incorporated into the Violence Against Women Reauthorization Act.

The original Violence against Women Act was passed in 1994 as part of the Violent Crime Control and Law Enforcement Act. It has been reauthorized twice previously by Congress, first in 2000, and again in 2005.
