The recent Taliban offensive against the city of Kunduz places women’s activists and women living in shelters at high risk of violence, according to Afghan women’s rights groups. The organization, Women for Afghan Women (WAW), said the Taliban have specifically targeted activists and women’s shelters and staff. Other groups report that “women in the shelters are at high risk of being kidnapped, raped or killed by Taliban fighters.”
