Lebanon: Woman Arrested After Alleging Rape and Torture by Military Personnel

The organization Human Rights Watch (HRW) reports that the Lebanese military has arrested and detained a woman after she publicly stated she was sexually assaulted while in military custody in 2013. The woman said the military “pressured her to withdraw the rape allegations reported by local media,” accusing her of lying about the rape and making “false accusations” for personal gain. HRW argues that Lebanon’s actions violate international law and Lebanon’s obligations under the UN Convention against Torture and the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights.
