On 14 March 2012, Turkey officially ratified the Council of Europe’s Convention to Combat Violence against Women after the Grand National Assembly of Turkey approved the Convention in November 2011. While 17 Council of Europe member states have signed the Convention, Turkey is the first state to sign and ratify it.
The Convention was adopted by the Council of Europe on 7 April 2011, and it was open for signatures on 11 May 2011. It will officially enter into force after 10 countries sign and ratify the Convention.
