At the end of April, President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador of Mexico said reports of violence against women had not increased during the country’s lockdown, contradicting official data that reports the opposite. Government data shows that emergency calls reporting violence against women in Mexico jumped 20 percent in March compared to the same month last year. The president’s declaration came hours before Amnesty International and other NGOs in Mexico published an open letter calling for more federal funding for women amid recent budget cuts as part of government austerity measures.
