In Peru, the Ministry of Women and Vulnerable Populations (MIMP) reported that, since the quarantine period, Peru has seen an increase in gender-based violence. The organization has estimated that 1,500 complaints have been made since the beginning of the crisis and 60% of reported domestic violence cases have occurred in heavily populated areas. 23 days after the implementation of stay-at-home orders, the hotline for violence against women received an average of 360 calls per day with 27 of those calls involving children. In late April, the Peruvian government implemented new legislation to protect against gender-based violence. The new order will allow judges to remove abusers from their homes during the quarantine period without a hearing.
