In March, the number of calls to the domestic violence helpline run by the Women’s Rights Center (CPK) in Poland went up by 50%. In some cases, women told CPK that when they called the police after an incident of domestic violence, they were told the authorities would not intervene, as police are understaffed and dealing with these cases is not a priority. CPK specialists are answering emails and working to create a chat service to allow women to engage with services in a safer way when confined at home with their abusers. As there has been no official action by the Polish government to mitigate the surge in domestic violence calls, Poland’s commissioner for human rights has appealed to the government for an urgent and comprehensive response plan to provide for survivors of domestic violence.
