Russian human rights commissioner Tatyana Moskalkova has stated that complaints and reports of domestic violence to NGOs have doubled from approximately 6,000 in March to more than 13,000 in April. These numbers stand in stark contrast to data provided by Russian police, who announced that domestic crimes fell by 13% during the lockdown period compared to the same month last year. Women’s rights activists dismissed the report from police as inaccurate as many victims do not report domestic abuse to authorities. Nine NGOs sent a letter to the government calling for officials to set up more shelters, to train police officers on the importance of responding to domestic violence calls, and to help survivors receive the medical, legal, and psychological care they need. So far, officials have not responded.
