UN-HABITAT has published a report on women's land, property and housing rights in an effort to further gender equality in this area of women's security. This report illuminates the existing legal framework for women’s inheritance and property rights in developing countries. The research was conducted between 2004 and 2005 with a goal of improving women’s rights in the area of housing and to bridge the gap between already existing laws and the actual situation on the ground.

The UN-HABITAT report covers selected countries of Latin America, Southern Africa and the Balkans, including Bosnia and Herzegovina, Croatia, Serbia and Montenegro. There is also a global overview of tenure options for women and religiously influenced property rights in the Muslim world. The report relates the issue of gender inequality to themes of women’s property rights, legal statutes, marital inheritance and the impact of customs and religion.
