Nobel Peace Prize Laureate Malala Yousafzai has called on the world to recognize and address the "gender apartheid" against women and girls in Afghanistan since the Taliban seized power there in 2021. She spoke on the topic December 5, in delivering the annual Nelson Mandela lecture in Johannesburg, South Africa. She highlighted restrictions on women and girls in education and employment, as well as beatings, imprisonment and forced marriages.
