After a parliamentary seminar organized in December 2012 in Lisbon in the context of the 16 days of activism against gender violence, the Portuguese parliament unanimously gave a green light to the ratification of the Council of Europe Convention on preventing and combating violence against women and domestic violence. One month earlier, in November, the Albanian parliament approved ratification of the same convention. This February, both countries deposited their instruments of ratification with the Council of Europe.

In January 2013, during the Regional Conference on the Istanbul Convention in Helsinki, the Director General of Human Rights and Rule of Law of the Council of Europe, Mr Philippe Boillat, stated that the “News from other countries is extremely encouraging and 2014 could start with the entry into force of the Istanbul Convention.”
