In Kenya, calls reporting cases of domestic increased by 34% during the first few weeks of their dusk to dawn curfew. One third of all crimes reported since lockdown measures were implemented were related to domestic violence. UN Women, UNFPA, and UNICEF are working with Kenya’s gender based violence and child protection hotlines to increase the psychological and counseling support who are often viewed as first responders in cases of domestic violence. Advocates are demanding that the Kenyan government take actions to protect its women and children who are vulnerable to violence during this pandemic by launching a public awareness campaign and by providing resources to the general public on how to reach out for help.
