Egypt: First Criminal Conviction for Female Genital Mutilation

Last year, a thirteen-year old Egyptian girl died after undergoing female genital mutilation (FGM). An Egyptian appeals court has sentenced the doctor who performed the procedure to two years in prison and ordered his clinic closed for a year. The girl's father was given a three month suspended sentence for his role in the operation. Egypt criminalized female genital mutilation (FGM) in 2008. However, this is the first time anyone has been convicted under the law, for both FGM and manslaughter. The Associated Press reports that ninety percent of Egyptian women are victims of FGM, one of the highest rates of FGM in the world.
