A new report by Amnesty International has exposed ongoing abuse against mostly older women accused of witchcraft in northern Ghana. Often triggered by misfortunes or personal disputes, these accusations have led to violence, banishment, and forced exile to “witch camps” with poor living conditions and no legal protections. Amnesty International has urged the Ghanaian government to criminalize witchcraft accusations, establish protective measures, and launch a national campaign to challenge cultural practices that fuel such abuses.
