The rise of right-wing, authoritarian movements across the world has led to a serious backlash against women’s rights, especially in the area of gender-based violence. While women in Turkey are being stripped of their rights on the basis of religious values, Spain’s far-right movement claims that a law designed to protect women from intimate partner violence discriminates against men and should be repealed. Similar movements have taken off in Russia, China, and Hungary, and other countries in which right-wing authoritarianism has become prevalent. This trend raises concerns about the future of global human rights.
