Hungary: Activists mobilize against anti-LGBTQ+ law as it comes into force

A new Hungarian law banning Pride events and enabling the use of facial recognition to identify participants has officially come into effect, prompting strong backlash from international human rights organizations. Critics warn that the legislation, passed under Prime Minister Viktor Orbán’s government, marks a dangerous escalation in the repression of LGBTQ+ rights in the country. The law criminalizes participation in events seen as violating “child protection” measures, which broadly prohibit the portrayal of LGBTQ+ topics to minors. Amnesty International and other advocacy groups have condemned the move as discriminatory and in violation of international human rights obligations. They are calling for global solidarity to challenge the law and defend LGBTQ+ rights in Hungary and beyond.
