Child marriage has been illegal in Malawi since 2017. Despite the criminalization, the practice continues to persist, particularly in rural, traditional communities, with an estimated 40 percent of girls in the nation married before age 18 (versus an estimated 20 percent globally). NGOs, activists and others continue efforts to stop the practice.
