Nigeria: Female Athletes Challenge Cultural Barriers in the North

A Reuters special report highlights how young women in northern Nigeria are defying conservative norms to pursue soccer, a sport long viewed as inappropriate for females in the region. In the city of Ilorin, players train in hijabs and long leggings to honor religious modesty while following their passion. Coaches have been working closely with parents and community leaders to gain approval while respecting Islamic values. Despite limited facilities, financial hardship, and public criticism, more girls are joining local teams inspired by the success of Nigeria’s national women’s squad, the Super Falcons. Advocates say that as these players become more visible, they are transforming attitudes about women’s roles in sports and society, helping shift the question from whether girls should play to how best to support them.
