56 non-governmental organizations and members of academia have expressed their support for gender quotas in Romania’s upcoming parliamentary elections. Their support was expressed in the form of an open letter addressed to the Romanian Parliament. The letter argues that gender quotas for parliamentary elections are necessary to address the historical inequalities of women in Romania and to maintain the principles of representative democracy. According to a recent report by the European Institute for Gender Equality (EIGE), Romania ranks last on measures of gender equality in the EU and second to last on measures of women’s political power.
