Although it has been sixteen years since Sri Lanka’s civil war has ended, Tamil women continue to fight for justice for atrocities committed during and after the conflict. Many were subjected to sexual violence by government forces, including horrific crimes in the war’s final days, such as rape, murder, and mutilation. Despite ongoing efforts by survivors and the families of the disappeared, successive governments have failed to ensure accountability. With little faith in domestic courts, the victim/survivors now look to international avenues, including the United Nations Sri Lanka Accountability Project, which the Human Rights Council must renew to support justice and end impunity.
