Amnesty International and UN Women have raised alarms over the escalating sexual and gender-based violence in Sudan amid the ongoing conflict that began in April 2023. The crisis has now been labeled the worst humanitarian emergency in the world for women and girls. They report that the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) has systematically used sexual violence as a weapon of war, leading to widespread trauma and displacement among women and girls, possibly amounting to crimes against humanity. The conflict has also severely impacted women's access to healthcare, education, and livelihoods, exacerbating existing gender inequalities. Survivors face immense barriers to justice, compounded by stigma and the collapse of essential services. Immediate international intervention is needed to protect civilians, ensure accountability for perpetrators, and provide comprehensive support to survivors.
