An annual report issued by the Department of Defense on May 7, 2013 revealed that sexual assault in the military rose by 35% since 2010. In 2012, approximately 26,000 persons in military service reported in an anonymous survey that they had experienced “unwanted sexual contact.” However, the Pentagon announced that only 3,374 reports of sexual assault were filed and less than one in ten ended with a court-martial conviction of sexual assault.

In response to the report, President Obama said, "[t]he bottom line is, I have no tolerance for this... If we find out somebody's engaging in this stuff, they've got to be held accountable, prosecuted, stripped of their positions, court-martialed, fired, dishonorably discharged - period."
