After nearly seven years, 45 members of Turkiye’s Saturday Mothers movement have been acquitted following a prolonged and unjust trial for attending their 700th peaceful vigil in 2018, which was violently dispersed by police. The group, composed mostly of family members of the forcibly disappeared during the 1980s and 1990s, has held weekly protests since 1995 demanding justice. Amnesty International welcomed the verdict and elucidated that it reaffirmed the vital role of peaceful protest in seeking accountability.
