Ukraine: Rising Cases of Domestic Violence during War with Russia

With the Russo-Ukrainian war still raging, there has been an estimated 51% increase in domestic violence cases in the first five months of 2023 compared with a year prior.  Punishment of perpetrators (when cases are prosecuted and punishment is handed down) under Ukrainian law ranges from as little as the equivalent of $5-10 fines or community service to as much as one to two years in prison. Economic hardships, as well as the war itself, seem to be contributing factors in the rising incidence of domestic violence.
