UN Secretary-General Appoints Special Representative on Sexual Violence in Conflict

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon
appointed Margot Wallstrom to be a Special Representative of the Secretary-General (SRSG) on Sexual Violence in Conflict pursuant to
Security Council Resolution 1888. As the SRSG, Wallstrom will address violence against women and children in conflict situations by increasing women’s involvement in decision-making and conflict resolution processes. Wallstrom will also work to have acts of sexual violence committed in war-time situations characterized as war crimes.
Wallstrom has advocated for women’s rights throughout her career. She is the outgoing Vice-President of the European Commission, a former Swedish Minister, and a former Member of the Swedish Parliament.
