UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women Calls for Comments on Recommendation Relating to Violence against Women

The UN Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW Committee) has asked all interested parties to comment on the draft update of General Recommendation No. 19 (1992), which identified violence against women as discrimination and a human rights violation under the UN Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women (CEDAW). The CEDAW Committee believes that updated guidance is necessary to help states meet their obligations under CEDAW because violence against women “has taken on new manifestations and occurs in new contexts,” and “in some cases” is becoming more severe.

The text of the Draft Update of General Recommendation No. 19 is available for download at the UN OHCHR website. Instructions for submitting comments on “25 years of CEDAW General Recommendation No. 19 (1992): Accelerating efforts on gender based violence against women,” are also available from OHCHR. In particular, the Committee has requested that interested parties submit their comments to crc@ohchr.org by September 30, 2016.
