Activists and Mexican legislators recently gathered in Mexico City to protest the extremely high levels of violence against women and girls in Mexico. The protestors urged the Mexican government to do more to prevent violent crimes against women, including femicides, or the killing of women because of their gender. According to the organization National Citizen Femicide Observatory, “six women are killed every day” in Mexico, many by a current or former intimate partner. These endemic rates of violence against women have placed Mexico among the United Nation’s 20 worst countries for domestic violence.
