The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has released its annual report, together with a new resource, "Good practices and major challenges in preventing and eliminating female genital mutilation." The OHCHR’s new resource on female genital mutilation (FGM) details steps already taken to eliminate the practice in certain countries and makes recommendations for further eradicating FGM. Among its recommendations, the resource suggests that states adopt and implement comprehensive legislation forbidding the practice, increase girls’ access to education, collect more data on FGM, and undertake educational initiatives to “delink the practice from religion, social norms, harmful stereotypes, and cultural beliefs” that continue to promote female genital mutilation.
